Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners Adds New Step to the License Renewal Process

The Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners (TBPTE) will require all licensees to submit their continuing competence activities beginning in February 2012. This decision is to help resolve the large number of failed CC audits, which represent 40% of all disciplinary actions taken by the TBPTE at each meeting. Licensees will enter the name, date, approval number, and number of CCUs granted for each activity during the renewal process. This new step will benefit licensees by helping ensure that they have the required number of approved CCUs and will be in compliance with TBPTE rules. This change is a part of the website redesign which the TBPTE expects to be completed by the end of the year. Please check the TBPTE website for more information.

Stambush Won't Affiliate

Recently, Supplemental Health Care approached Stambush about being one of their "affiliated vendors." Apparently, about a year ago, they signed an agreement with a national rehab provider to provide Vendor Management Services (VMS). This means all other contract companies go through Supplemental to be booked, and those contract companies provide all pertinent information to Supplemental. Well, just to be fair, I read the proposed contract, but it said nothing to change my mind. Here is the entire email I wrote back; I only deleted the name of the person I was sending it to as well as the name of the customer.

Incidentally, even though the customer went with Supplemental over a year ago, we have still been sending them people. Maybe we won't anymore, but that will be sad. Why? Because we have the best business practices, the best therapists, and we have an awesome company culture that wants to not just make money, but also be a force for good. So, in keeping with having a transparent company, here you go:

"Hi ______________,

No problem about the phone tag – we’re both busy. Besides, an email might be better. I am happy to keep supporting __________, but going through Supplemental to support ______________ seems like a conflict of interest. In essence, I would be helping a competitor take a client away from me and placing my employees’ data in my competitor’s possession. This would put Supplemental in a position to say to everyone, “who needs any other agency? Even other agencies go through us.” If I were one of your affiliated vendors, I would not be in a position to challenge that.

Additionally, we are very different agencies. For example, Stambush is totally against hiring inexperienced new graduates, and to support a company that hires inexperienced new graduates would be hypocritical of me. Also, since we are competitors, shouldn’t we be trying to blow each other out of the water? Well, I can see where this new VMS role could help Supplemental blow everyone else out of the water. Even if that is not your plan, doesn’t Supplemental want to make Stambush go away? I know I want to make Supplemental go away. I may be overly competitive, but I actually think the whole Houston area would be much better off if Stambush were the only agency around.

I hope I don’t seem rude, but I can’t even wish a competitor good luck (I did that once as an amateur boxer and got my head beat in).

Finally, this whole proposed relationship gives me Antitrust Heartburn. It may very well be legal…but, did you all have an Antitrust Lawyer give you the thumbs up on this?

At the risk of being redundant, I based my reasoning on the fact that Stambush is here to make the world a better place. We are the leaders in this industry, and we are going to protect our patients, customers, and professions by staying true to our principles. And, may I add, we will always be a force to be reckoned with while we have people like you on our side.
